How do people grow, organisations develop, and societies change?

A question that began in 2005 and remains open: are there shared mechanisms that help explain change in people, organisations, and societies?

01

Where this question began

In 2005, I began asking this question seriously. It is not a problem that yields to one final answer; it requires long-term observation, discussion, testing, and revision. I now want to preserve that path in public and invite people with different experiences into it.

What forces genuinely produce growth and change? Which changes are temporary, and which become a durable capacity to develop?

My current working view is that growth is not a single event. It is a loop shaped by agency, relationships, feedback, and environment. Concrete cases should continue to challenge this view.

02

Three connected levels

The same question of growth reveals different mechanisms at different scales.

01

Human growth

Why does a person genuinely change?

Examining how experience, reflection, relationships, choice, and action form new capacity—not merely more knowledge.

02

Organisational development

How does a group become capable of learning together?

Examining how purpose, ownership, trust, disagreement, and institutions turn individual capacity into organisational capacity.

03

Social change

When does local action become structural change?

Examining how technology, culture, interests, and institutions interact—and how change spreads or is blocked.

03

Questions for your experience

You do not need to write an essay. Choose one question, then write or simply speak.

01

Have you experienced a turning point that genuinely changed you?

Describe what was different before and after, and which factor actually mattered.

02

What makes an organisation truly learn, rather than simply move faster?

A real organisational success or failure is especially useful here.

03

What small change have you seen eventually alter a larger system?

It may come from a family, company, community, industry, or society.

04

Inquiry record

  1. The question begins

I begin a sustained inquiry into the relationship between human growth, organisational development, and social change.

  2. The inquiry becomes public

A living topic opens on PeterZou.com to publish questions, working judgments, and outside feedback.
